5 Simple Ways to Get More from Your Closet Edit

A well-edited closet of pastel clothing and accessories.

When it comes to getting to know my clients, their wardrobes generally speak louder than they do.

From a client’s perspective, a closet edit is your opportunity to purge your wardrobe of items that no longer serve you and find new ways to style what you already own. But from a personal stylist’s POV, it tells me what you actually wear versus what you think you’ll wear, which key pieces we need to shop for, and how I can coach you to maintain your personal style after my services are complete.

Your time is valuable. Spending a little time preparing helps us make the most of our time together and helps me more accurately assess your style needs.

5 Quick and Easy Ways to Prepare for Your Closet Edit:

1. Clear a Workspace

We’ll need space to sort your clothing and photograph key pieces. Most clients prefer to lay their clothing on their bed, and I find it helpful to also bring my portable rolling rack to hang delicate pieces and aid in the photography process. I understand that not everyone has the space for an extra rack in their bedroom, so just do the best you can.

2. Do a Quick mini Purge

Our time together is valuable. Don’t waste it on items you know you won’t keep. Spend 30 minutes gut-checking the items in your closet. Donate or toss items that don’t suit you, are permanently stained or worn out, or don’t fit.

3. Make Sure Everything Is Clean

Laundry often takes a back seat to grocery runs, late meetings, and sports practice, especially when there’s dry cleaning involved. Wash or dry clean dingy and stained items to make sure they’re salvageable. This ensures that we’re taking an accurate inventory so I can help you replace worn-out basics. A fresh cleaning can also make older items feel new again, further streamlining the shopping process.

4. Share Your Inspiration

Use the questions in my intake quiz as a jumping-off point to start thinking about your personal style. In addition to celebrities and influencers whose style you admire, think about style eras and vibes that inspire you. If you have a Pinterest style board, please share it with me.

5. Make a Plan to Minimize Interruptions

Don’t let distractions detract from your experience. Block off your work calendar and banish partners, kids, and pets from your closet. This time belongs solely to you. Let’s honor it!
